Subject: circle of fifths...was Re: 12th position

this has become really confusing.
the circle of fifths is based on scale degrees. you start at x and count
five ~scale degrees~ (including x). this is the fifth of where ever you started.
this is also your new starting point. count five scale degrees from this
new note and this is next in the circle. and so on, until you get back to your
original spot.

example...
starting on c....c-d-e-f-G...g is the fifth of c, and your new starting point.
so, starting on g...g-a-b-c-D
and then starting on d...d-e-f#-g-A
and so on.

if you've memorized what harps to use in cross-harp, but haven't figured out
the theory behind it, try this. what key are you in when you play cross harp
on a
c-harp? you will say g. then ask what key you're in when you play cross on
a g-harp. you will say d. and so on.

hope this doesn't muddy things further...
